The Lucky One

On Sunday, last week, Donna, Andrea and I went to the movies to see The Lucky One.

For a role that Zac Efron spent so much time bulking up for, there was a definite lack of shirtlessness in this movie! Other than that it was a cute rom-com!!

Always a fun afternoon with the girls!

Reds v Stormers

Last Friday night my friend Dave organised a trip to Suncorp Stadium to watch the Reds take on the Stormers. Dave and I were joined by our other friends Bee & Greg.

For someone who loves her sport so much, it surprised quite a few people that this was my first ever live Super Rugby match.

I decided to paint my nails red in support of the Reds! See I can do girly too...

It was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed hanging out with everyone, but not having the commentators to rely on definitely made me realise I need a better understanding of the rules! Just something to work on!

In the end the Stormers were too good for the Reds. The Reds are having a horror run with injuries this season!

Belle's Baby Shower

On Sunday, my darling friend Belle had her baby shower! She and her hubby are expecting twin girls in June. I posted about my baking efforts for the event here!

Here is the result of the effort:

The setup at the shower

The centrepiece cake

The cupcakes, the vase filled with jelly beans and the centrepiece cake

The inside of the centrepiece cake

 The yummy mummy-to-be and I

I'm pretty proud of my first attempt at decorating a cake! By the time the christening comes around, I'll be a pro... haha - maybe not ;)

My first sewing project - complete!!

On Sunday morning, I put the last remaining stitches into my first ever sewing project!

Here is the result:

Back

I'm really proud of myself! I did the majority of it and only relied on mum for sorting out the buttons and loops and mum hemmed it for me. Apart from that, I did it all myself!

Next on the agenda is the dress pattern this top was amended from!

Saturday Baking!

I spent, literally, all day Saturday baking and decorating. My friend Belle is expecting twins in June, and Sunday was her baby shower! In the last couple of years, I've made cupcakes for her engagement party to her now husband Dave, as well as their wedding cupcakes! After yesterday, we can also add baby shower cakes to the list and I've already been asked to do the christening cake!

Belle had invited 60 people to the baby shower, but when I was discussing with her mum only 40 people had RSVP'd so I decided to make 50 cupcakes and a centrepiece cake as a buffer for any extras who weren't accommodated for in the 50 cupcakes.

I started baking at 845am on Saturday morning and finished decorating the centrepiece cake at 845pm.

Mid-bake photo

It may have taken all day, but the time, money and effort spent was so worth it to see how happy Belle was with the final result.

Photos and a post on the baby shower to come soon!

Broncos V Raiders

Mum scored a shop-a-docket that was offering 2-4-1 tickets to the Broncos v Raiders game on Friday night!! So my gorgeous friend D & I decided to go!

We started our night, as per tradition, at Iceworks! One of our favourite bartenders was working so we asked him to make us cosmos! He makes really good cosmos!

Then we headed over to the game!

Pre-game warm-up

This was definitely a game the Broncos should have won, but I wasn't feeling all that confident. You see, I had a little bit of a hoodoo that needed breaking! In the start of this season and all of last season, every time D & I have gone to a Broncos match that I bought the tickets too, they have lost!! Anytime we've had free tickets, or D's bought the tickets, they've won!! Even 2 weeks ago when Tahlia and I went, I bought the tickets and they won, it just seemed to be whenever D & I went!!

During the week it was looking pretty good. The Broncos had been playing well and I was thinking "Yes! My hoodoo will be broken!!" Then Peter Wallace pulled out injured, and I started to panic! OK that might be a slight over-exaggeration, but the confidence levels were diminishing.

Luckily the Broncos played really well! Corey Norman and Ben Hunt were outstanding! They ran away with the match 30-6 in the end, and D & I were very happy they got the win!

Here is D & I at the game!

Learning to Sew!

For those who know me, you would know that I have a lot of trouble buying dresses that are long enough for my 6' tall frame! As a result, my uber talented mum generally makes a lot of my dresses for me!!

She is so talented, it's ridiculous!

Once I gave her a dress of my friend Tahlia's from Powerhouse M&F, and asked her to make it for me. It wasn't a simple design either!! Sure enough, she made her own pattern off a fully constructed dress and then made the dress for me. Crazy! But it's definitely a skill I am thankful she has!!

Anyway, I decided it was about time that I tried my hand at sewing. A few weeks ago I bought some fabric from Spotlight for a dress and bought a Vogue-Anna Sui pattern to use the fabric for. Mum suggested that we should make a "rough draft" to ensure the pattern was the right size before using the good fabric.

As mum was otherwise occupied, painting a piece for my friends' twins' nursery (yes, she can paint as well... too many creative genes in her-it's not fair!!) I decided to give the top of the dress pattern a crack from some 40yr old fabric of mum's I have loved for years!! Thankfully there was just enough left to get the top out!!

Here is a photo from day 1:

It has progressed quite well from there. I will post a photo once it is complete!

I'm pretty proud, so far I've done all of the construction myself! Mum's just advised me on the best way to do things!! Can't wait to finish it and show you all!!

Davis Cup

Practically anyone who knows me, knows that Mum & I love tennis! So yesterday we spent Good Friday at the Queensland Tennis Centre, watching Australia play Korea in the Oceania/Asia group of the Davis Cup.

National Anthems

It was lots of fun!

First up was Bernard Tomic.

Bernie awaiting the Korean's serve

At the start of the match, Bernie wasn't playing that well. He got broken in his first service game, and generally just didn't play that well. Thankfully he got it together and ended up winning the match 7-5 6-3 6-3.

Australia goes up 1-0 in the tie

Up next was Matt Ebden, who was playing his first "live" tie! For those who don't understand this phrase the quick explanation is as follows. In Davis Cup it is a best of 5 series between the two nations. Two singles matches, a doubles match and then the reverse singles. Generally if a team wins the first 3 ties, they will "blood" younger players in the reverse singles to give them experience. This way when the day comes that they actually play a tie that is "live" and counts towards the result, they will hopefully not feel as nervous.

Matt Ebden at the change of ends with Davis Cup Captain Pat Rafter

Matt Ebden played very good tennis! It was great to see him get a crack at a live tie (due to Lleyton Hewitt's latest injury) and in the end he won 6-3 6-3 6-4.

Australia goes up 2-0 after the first day of the tie

We had a lot of fun, as per usual and makes me excited for the Brisbane International and Australian Open in January!! Bring it on!!

Things I Love: Porscha

I am completely and utterly besotted with my puppy dog Porscha!! She is the cutest thing in the world and has such a quirky personality! Sometimes I even wonder if she has split personalities!! She can be so out-there/friendly/crazy/excitable and at other times she can be the biggest wuss/sook/sad-sack in the world!

But I love her.

This is a photo of her when she was a couple of months old:

I missed her a lot while I was away!!

One of my favourite things to do with Porschy is take her swimming in our pool! She LOVES it and goes mental every time she ends up anywhere near the pool!

I taught her a little trick too! I've taught her "cuddles"!! If I stick my arm out in front of her front legs and say "cuddles" she jumps up onto my arm then I can swing my other arm under back legs and pick her up! She even sits on my hip like a child!! hehe. It is the most adorable thing <3

She also thinks she is a lap dog... Despite being a German Shorthaired Pointer!

This is her curled up in my lap, while I am sitting at the computer studying in 2010!

And finally this is a photo I love, so very much! This is Porscha and I watching Wimbledon at some ridiculous hour of the morning last year!!

Yes she is wrapped up in an old doona!

Love you Porsch!

WOO HOO! Go HEAT!

My beloved Miami HEAT secured their place in the 11/12 NBA Playoffs today with their win over the Philadelphia 76ers!!

Excited for them to play in the playoffs again this season!

I hope they go one better than last year!!

Here are a few shots from a couple of HEAT games I went to while I was in America!!

I'm not as young as I used to be...

So on Saturday night my friend Tahlia and I headed out for our first night "out" on the town in a long time. Generally my girlfriends and I just go to Iceworks, but on Saturday we decided to bar hop through the city/valley.

We started our night at her apartment with a bottle of wine and then headed out for dinner and dessert!

Here is a photo of us whilst we were waiting in line at Freestyle in the Valley!

From there we went to Limes and met up with the beautiful Siany, her hubby Matt and another friend Anthony! It was the first time I'd been to Limes and I really liked it! Such a cute little rooftop bar!!

From there we made a quick stop at a place called "Our Place" I'd never even heard of it... But my swimmer friend Skeet was out and about after Olympic trials the other week and I hadn't seen him since long before I left for America so was great to catch up with him and say hi!

From there we jumped in a cab, and by jumped in a cab I mean we waited in line at a taxi rank for a good 30mins! And headed into the city and headed to The Exchange where Tahlia's boyfriend and my friend Amy both were.

It was so great to catch up with Amy, we used to swim together and she went to the same high school as me, but she was 4 years behind me. We've been friends for a long time and after not seeing much of her in recent years, I've seen her 3 times in the last 3 or 4 weeks. It's been lovely.

Here is a photo of us:

It was so great to see her, but wow did she make me feel old! We didn't meet up until about 1am and she still had SO much energy! I did not have so much energy ;) haha. Nonetheless, it was good fun, we danced and talked for awhile before Tahlia and I called it a night and headed back to her place and crashed for the night.

It's been a long time since I've bar hopped through the city, and I actually quite enjoyed myself... Might do it a little more often if I can convince my friends to join me!

Broncos v Dragons!

On Friday night, my friend Tahlia and I went to the Broncos v Dragons game at Suncorp Stadium. This was a match that was high on my list of must see matches for 2012 because it was used to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Broncos first ever premiership--a win over the Dragons in the 1992 Grand Final!

It was a lot of fun to catch up with Tahls and enjoy the display the Broncos put on in the first half. The second half was a little more stressful, with the Dragons coming back... But in the end the Broncos were too good and won the match 28-20!

I love my football, and I love that so many of my girlfriends love footy too! It always makes for a fun night out!!

Mooloolaba Triathlon 2012

A couple of weekends ago, I spent the weekend at Mooloolaba with my friends Belle, Dave, Bee & Greg for the Mooloolaba Triathlon weekend.

When Belle asked me a few months ago if I wanted to come up again, like I did last year, I of course said yes. I even decided that I would sign up for the 1km Ocean Swim...

The 12 month taper probably wasn't the best idea...

I honestly thought 1km was nothing and that I would be fine... However, it was definitely a struggle!

This realisation has resulted in Dave and I agreeing to do some training sessions each week. Dave's competing in the Byron Triathlon in May and then Noosa in November. I'm planning to sign up for the Ocean Swim at Noosa too...

Hopefully I can beat my time from Mooloolaba at Noosa :)

Here is a photo of me finishing the race:
