The Chelsea

On Saturday night, Mum, pseudo Mum and I went to dinner at The Chelsea!

The Chelsea is one of my favourite little restaurants!

Pseudo Mum and I went there a few months back, and we had the most divine dessert!! We were very anxious about the prospect of it no longer being on the menu... But thankfully it was!!!

The dessert is a light honey mousse, with pistachio dukkah and warm caramelised dates. It is soooooooooo good!

Had a lovely evening with Mum and pseudo Mum as always!

Catch ups!

Last Monday I caught up with a really good friend of mine, C. We were supposed to meet up for lunch, but lunch turned into lunch and a movie, which turned into lunch, a movie and dinner!

I love it when that happens. Some of the best days are those that start off as a simple plan that escalates.

We ended up seeing The Campaign. Definitely a typical Will Ferrell movie, but there were some hilarious lines and scenes!

It was so good to see him!! He was actually my date to my semi formal and we've been good friends ever since.

Olympic Moments: Golden Girls

In the space of a couple of hours, Australia doubled their Gold Medal tally from 2 to 4, thanks to Anna Meares and Sally Pearson.

Anna was fantastic in her defeat of fierce arch rival Victoria Pendleton in the Women's Sprint.

This rivalry had been seriously hyped in the lead up to London. I am sure everyone is aware of the ongoing rivalry between these two girls! You only need to google them to see some of the banter that has gone on.

After a disappointing finish to the Keirin, it was great to see Anna come out and ride so brilliantly. Her manoeuvre at the top of the velodrome was sensational!! If you haven't seen the race - youtube it! I'm sure it's around somewhere!!

Congratulations Anna.

Sally Pearson. What can you say about Sally? She is seriously amazing!! In the last 35 starts she has only been beaten once!! Once in 35 races!! Having been so dominant over such a large period of time, it would have been absolutely heartbreaking to falter at the final hurdle. (See what I did there!! haha).

Luckily for her, and for all of us riding the journey at home, she didn't!!

She won by 0.02 over the reigning Olympic champion Dawn Harper of the USA. Her reaction to the win was priceless. It seemed to take an eternity for the official results to be shown, but when they finally did, her reaction was beautiful!

Congratulations Sally!

Let's see if we can add a few more gold to the tally before the Olympics are over!!

Travel Snap Tuesday: Atlanta

So, I'm bringing back Travel Snap Tuesday!! Basically I am just looking for an excuse to share some my adventures from my six months in the US of A!

For those who don't know, or don't remember, Travel Snap Tuesday is the brainchild of Little Miss Moi and is about sharing a moment in time through a photo (or three).

I was lucky enough to spend 2 months living in Atlanta with S, T and their darling daughter M in late October/November/early December last year. S is the daughter of our neighbours and they so graciously let me live with them for awhile, while I was waiting to hear about a job. I had such a lovely time staying with them and M is so incredibly cute (I love kids - super clucky!!).

NYC Plans

I know, shock horror, I'm blogging and it has nothing to do with the Olympics! I realise I've been a little one track mind lately, but the Olympics have been taking over my life. In between watching the Olympics all night and sleeping when I can, Mum and I have been looking at planning bits and pieces of our NYC adventure.

By now, everyone knows just how sports obsessed I am! When I lived in the USA last year for six months I went to:
  • 4 days of the US Open Tennis;
  • 4 NBA games, including Christmas Day at Madison Square Garden;
  • 2 NHL games;
  • 1 NFL game;
  • 1 College football game; and
  • 1 MLB game.
So when Mum and I decided to go to NYC this year for the US Open, she asked me if there was any other sport I wanted to see.

Unfortunately the NBA and NHL will still be in their off-seasons. I think this blog has made it pretty obvious that I am obsessed with the NBA, in particular the Miami HEAT!! 2 of my 4 live NBA games were HEAT games. I don't really blog about it as much, because I struggle to see their games, but I've been a massive fan of the Calgary Flames in the NHL since January 2008 when I saw them play against Phoenix. Unfortunately I won't get to see either of them play again this time.

My 2nd row seat @ Flames v NY Islanders in December 2011

The NFL will be in the final week of their pre-season the weekend we arrive and regular season doesn't commence until the weekend we leave. In terms of my NFL team, it is kinda a little random, and definitely not one of the "major" teams. I support the Carolina Panthers, who hail from Charlotte in North Carolina. Needless to say, I've only been through North Carolina, so I didn't get to see them play live.

When I started to look into the pre-season schedule, I was beyond excited to see that Carolina were scheduled to play the New York Jets, at the Jets home stadium. It was decided then and there, that I was going to go and watch them play! I told mum I'd go by myself if she didn't want to come - but there was no way I wasn't going to see Carolina play! She decided to come :)

We bought our tickets last night, so needless to say I am beyond excited to see my team play live! After this I will have seen all of my favourite American sports teams play!!! I'm so excited!!

Olympic Moments: GOLD!

So as I was watching the Olympics tonight, wondering what moment would make the cut as a blog worthy Olympic Moment, I thought I had found it in Patty Mills.

Patty Mills sunk a buzzer-beating 3-point shot that ensured that Australia beat Russia in the basketball. Having lead for almost the entirety of the match, Australia found themselves down by 1 with 4 seconds left on the clock. Russia had been previously unbeaten, so getting a win against them was a great confidence booster for the Aussies going into their next match against the USA.

But then that moment got overshadowed.

Overshadowed by Tom Slingsby winning GOLD in the Laser classification sailing race!

That's right Australia finally won another gold medal!!! WOO HOO!!!

Congratulations to Tom - you are Australia's first individual gold medalist at the 2012 London Olympics!!

Olympic Moments: Bolt!

I know there had been a lot of talk regarding who would win the Men's 100m sprint, given that Yohan Blake had beaten Usain Bolt in the Jamaican trials, only a few weeks ago. But having seen Bolt cruise in the heats, I really thought the race was his to lose.

A lot of talk had also been on the fact that Bolt would need an incredible start to be able to match it with the others.

Sure enough, Bolt got the start he needed, and he never looked in doubt as he ran his way to his second consecutive gold medal in the 100m sprint.

He's such a freak!! He honestly looked like he did it easily.

I can't wait to see him in the 200m race later in the week!

Olympic Moments: WHY?!

Not to be overly dramatic... Wait, who am I kidding. But quite honestly, the worst possible thing that could have possibly happened at this Olympic Games has happened...

Andy Murray won the Men's Singles Gold Medal..... WHY?????? HOW??????

I. Can't. Even. **inset massive sigh here**

It's not even that I wanted Federer to win. Even though it would have been incredibly fitting for Fed to complete the Career Golden Grand Slam. It's just I really, really, really wanted Murray to lose.

Just like my feelings of #AnyoneButManly in the NRL, I was seriously advocating #AnyoneButMurray - and that is in any tournament, ever. I would have been quite content if he'd never won anything major, ever.

I have reasons for disliking him as a player: mainly the fact that he is such a bloody whinger!

I actually feel sick, realising that he's won a gold medal.

Uggh. Will have to take solace in the fact that he's still never won a grand slam...!

Olympic Moments: A Stroll in London

Usain Bolt lined up, last night, for the first round of the Men's 100m sprint.

There had been a fair bit of talk in the lead up to the event regarding the fact that Bolt had been beaten in Jamaican trials and whether or not he'd bounce back, or not?!

I think it was a pretty telling sign that all he had to do was cruise. Sure it looked like he may have pushed the first 15 metres, if that... But from there after, he simply took a stroll down the track. Even cruising, he won his heat easily.

I saw a great tweet last night, it read: "You know you're fast when you can walk the last 50 of a 100m sprint".

And it couldn't have been more true.

Olympic Moments: 1/100th

Swimming is an incredibly cruel sport.

You get one chance. Every 4 years to qualify for the Olympics.

If you don't perform on the 1 day of Olympic Trials, you don't go. Period. It doesn't matter if you are capable of better, you don't perform for the 1 min, 2 mins or 4 mins etc of your event, you miss out.

A good friend of mine went 0.30 seconds slower than his PB at Olympic Trials in March, and that was the difference between an Olympic spot and not making the team.

Like Michael Phelps the night before, James Magnussen found out just how cruel the sport can be.

He went so close to winning Australia's first gold medal in the Men's 100m Freestyle, only to fall an agonising 0.01 seconds short. Now he has to wait until Rio in 2016 for another shot. That is the nature of the beast.

Hopefully he'll swim well in the 50m and maybe, just maybe, he can win Australia another gold medal!

Olympic Moments: A Family Affair & So Close

Two Olympic Moments I wanted to mention after last nights action.

The first is Zara Phillips winning silver as part of Team GB's equestrian team and having her medal presented to her by her mother!

Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal (Princess Anne) has presented Olympic Equestrian Medals for sometime as part of the IOC, and this Olympics was to be no different. The only difference was that this year, her daughter Zara Phillips, was apart of Team GB and GB won the silver in the 3 day event. This makes Zara the first member of the Royal Family to win a medal. Seeing mother present daughter with her Olympic medal was really sweet. They even snuck in a quick cheek kiss too!
